Gemini Notebook

Please note: Gemini and Gemini Notebook are only available for a small number of local authorities as part of a pilot programme to evaluate how they could be used in the classroom with learners. The pilot will run from Aug 2025 – Jan 2026 and then we will update this page with the outcomes.

Be aware that these Generative AI tools contain functionality which allows the upload of pictures and files. It is the responsibility of the user not to upload content or enter prompts which may generate inappropriate or concerning text or imagery, or which contains any personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Please also refer to the Scottish Government’s AI Guidance for Schools when using any kind of AI tool within education.

What is Gemini Notebook?

Gemini Notebook is an innovative AI tool designed to function as a personalised research and learning assistant within education. Users can upload a variety of source materials, including documents and articles, and engage with them in a more interactive and insightful manner. Gemini Notebook can be used to summarise complex information, providing precise answers based on uploaded sources, and enabling users to identify connections between disparate pieces of information, thereby enhancing understanding. This functionality effectively streamlines research and study processes, fostering more efficient and targeted learning. Gemini Notebook can also be used to create audio podcast content in 34 languages, which facilitates with making complex documents accessible to all and MindMaps, which is the latest feature to be added.

Where does it pull information from?

Gemini Notebook does not scrape the internet for information and only works with the documents and links you upload.

Who can access Gemini Notebook within Glow?

Please note that Gemini Notebook is an 18+ app and will only be available to staff within Glow if their local authority or establishment have requested access to Google Workspace.

What do I need to be aware of?

As with any AI tool, you should always review any information before presenting it to your students. Gemini Notebook has the potential to boost creativity, improve lesson planning, and support teaching.

Gemini Notebook offers several powerful features to enhance user interaction, productivity and accessibility. Open up the sections below to find out how you can make the most out of these features.

Uploading Sources and Chat

You can upload your own sources like, lesson materials, policies or academic papers and Gemini Notebook will only use information pulled from these sources, so does not have to scrape the web.
However, if you do want to browse the web for other sources then you can use the discover feature.


Appropriate Use: Do not upload files that contain personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Educators could use the Chat to analyse the Sources that have been uploaded to:
– Summarise Research: Upload documents for quick overviews.
– Generate Discussion: Share course outlines for question ideas.
– Suggest Activities: Provide learning aims for activity suggestions.
– Simplify Complex Information: Upload articles for easier explanations.
– Improve Worksheets: Share drafts for feedback.

Example of use: A maths teacher simplifies complex topics before presenting them in class

Data Privacy: When accessing Gemini Notebook via Glow, files are stored for 48 hours and are not reviewed by humans.

Audio Overview

The audio overview is an engaging 2 way conversation that really supports with, accessibility and convenience, enhanced comprehension, efficiency and speed, improved retention and hands free interaction. The way the audio is presented might offer a slightly different perspective on the information compared to just reading the text. This can sometimes spark new insights or clarify ambiguities.

Appropriate Use: Do not add any personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Educators could use Audio Overview to:
– Make learning easier to access: Turn text into audio for students who learn best by listening.
– Offer learning on the go: Students can listen while doing other things.
– Make topics interesting: AI conversations can make learning more lively.
– Help students review: Quickly listen to key ideas again.
– Focus on what’s important: Customise the audio to highlight specific topics.
– Start classroom talks: Use the audio as a basis for discussions.
– Provide different ways to learn: Add audio to reading materials.
– Share information easily: Share links or files of the audio.
