What is Google Vids?

Google Vids is a video creation and editing application that is part of the Google Workspace suite. It’s designed to help users create professional-looking informational videos without needing extensive video editing experience.

How could Educators use Google Vids?

  • Create Engaging Video Lessons:

Transform traditional slide decks or text-heavy content into dynamic video lessons. This can help cater to diverse learning styles and improve information retention, especially for flipped or blended learning models.

  • Informational Videos:

Produce short explainer videos to clarify complex concepts, introduce new units, or provide a quick overview of a topic.

  • Announcements and Communication:

Create personalised video announcements for students, parents, or staff, adding a more personal touch than text-only messages. This could include school newsletters, event promotions, or important updates.

  • Professional Development:

Develop concise training videos for colleagues on new software, teaching strategies, or school policies.

  • Teaching Demos and Welcome Messages:

Record welcoming messages for new students or demonstrate teaching techniques for professional growth.

  • Repurpose Existing Content:

Convert blog posts, articles, or lesson plans into engaging video formats to broaden their reach and accessibility.

How could Learners use Google Vids?

  • Creative Project-Based Learning:

Students can use Vids to create research-based videos, documentaries, or presentations that showcase their understanding of a topic. This encourages creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.

  • Video Essays:

Encourage students to create analytical videos on literary works, historical events, or scientific concepts, incorporating multimedia elements to support their arguments.

  • Digital Portfolios:

Students can create video showcases of their capstone projects, artwork, or other achievements, making their portfolios more dynamic and engaging.

  • “How-To” Tutorials:

Students can produce instructional videos on various subjects, from explaining a maths problem to demonstrating a science experiment, enhancing their organisational and presentation abilities.

  • Bring Writing to Life:

Students can transform essays, narratives, or opinion pieces into visual presentations, deepening their understanding of audience and purpose.

  • Collaborative Projects:

Google Vids’ real-time collaboration features (similar to Docs or Slides) allow students to work together on video projects, fostering teamwork and shared responsibility.

Key Advantages of Google Vids in Education

  • Ease of Use:

Its intuitive interface, similar to Google Slides, makes it accessible even for those with no prior video editing experience.

  • AI-Powered Assistance:

Gemini’s integration helps with generating outlines, scripts, suggested media, and voiceovers, significantly speeding up the creation process.

  • Integration with Google Workspace:

Seamlessly connect with Google Classroom, Drive, and Photos for easy importing of existing materials and sharing of finished videos.

  • Accessibility Features:

Auto-generated closed captions and various voiceover options can support diverse learning needs.

  • Templates and Stock Media:

A library of customisable templates and royalty-free stock media helps users quickly create professional-looking videos.

Sharing your video

You’ve got several flexible options for sharing your Google Vids creations. Just like other files in Google Workspace, you can share your video directly with specific Google users, giving them viewer, commenter, or editor access depending on how you want them to interact with your content.

For broader use, you can download your video as an MP4 file, which gives you a standard video file to use anywhere. If you’re using Google Classroom, you’ll be glad to know you can link your Vids directly when creating assignments.

Always remember to share appropriately and consider your audience’s access needs.
