What is NotebookLM?

Notebook LM is an innovative AI tool designed to function as a personalised research and learning assistant within education. Users can upload a variety of source materials, including documents and articles, and engage with them in a more interactive and insightful manner. NotebookLM can be used to summarise complex information, providing precise answers based on uploaded sources, and enabling users to identify connections between disparate pieces of information, thereby enhancing understanding. This functionality effectively streamlines research and study processes, fostering more efficient and targeted learning. Notebook LM can also be used to create audio podcast content in 34 languages, which facilitates with making complex documents accessible to all and MindMaps, which is the latest feature to be added.

Where does it pull information from?

NotebookLM does not scrape the internet for information and only works with the documents and links you upload.

Who can access NotebookLM within Glow?

Please note that NotebookLM is an 18+ app and will only be available to staff within Glow if their local authority or establishment have requested access to Google Workspace.

What do I need to be aware of?

As with any AI tool, you should always review any information before presenting it to your students. NotebookLM has the potential to boost creativity, improve lesson planning, and support teaching.
Please remember not add any personal, sensitive or confidential information.

NotebookLM Features #

NotebookLM offers several powerful features to enhance user interaction, productivity and accessibility. Open up the sections below to find out how you can make the most out of these features.

Uploading Sources and Chat

You can upload your own sources like, lesson materials, policies or academic papers and NotebookLM will only use information pulled from these sources, so does not have to scrape the web.
However, if you do want to browse the web for other sources then you can use the discover feature.

Appropriate Use: Do not upload files that contain personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Educators could use the Chat to analyse the Sources that have been uploaded to:
– Summarise Research: Upload documents for quick overviews.
– Generate Discussion: Share course outlines for question ideas.
– Suggest Activities: Provide learning aims for activity suggestions.
– Simplify Complex Information: Upload articles for easier explanations.
– Improve Worksheets: Share drafts for feedback.

Example of use: A maths teacher simplifies complex topics before presenting them in class

Data Privacy: When accessing NotebookLM via Glow, files are stored for 48 hours and are not reviewed by humans.

Audio Overview

The audio overview is an engaging 2 way conversation that really supports with, accessibility and convenience, enhanced comprehension, efficiency and speed, improved retention and hands free interaction. The way the audio is presented might offer a slightly different perspective on the information compared to just reading the text. This can sometimes spark new insights or clarify ambiguities.

Appropriate Use: Do not add any personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Educators could use Audio Overview to:
– Make learning easier to access: Turn text into audio for students who learn best by listening.
– Offer learning on the go: Students can listen while doing other things.
– Make topics interesting: AI conversations can make learning more lively.
– Help students review: Quickly listen to key ideas again.
– Focus on what’s important: Customise the audio to highlight specific topics.
– Start classroom talks: Use the audio as a basis for discussions.
– Provide different ways to learn: Add audio to reading materials.
– Share information easily: Share links or files of the audio.

Study Guide

The study guide can be generated and includes, a quiz with a quiz answer key, essay format questions and a helpful glossary of terms.

Educators could use the Study Guide to:
– Quickly get summaries: See the main points of your documents fast.
– Learn key words: Find important terms and their meanings easily.
– Create quizzes: Get ideas for questions to test understanding.
– Organise studying: Help students see the structure of the material.
– Support struggling students: Give extra help with the core content.
– Review for tests: Quickly refresh knowledge of main ideas.
– Change and improve study tools: Edit the guide to fit your needs.

The briefing document you generate can be used for summarisation, key takeaways and thematic connections from the sources you uploaded.

Appropriate Use: Do not add any personal, sensitive or confidential information.

Educators could use the Briefing Doc to:

– Quickly understand many documents: Get a short summary of all your sources together.The briefing doc
– Find main ideas across sources: See the key points that keep coming up.
– See how documents relate: Understand if sources agree or disagree.
– Prepare for lessons fast: Get a general idea without reading everything deeply.
– Create good questions: Use the main ideas to make discussion topics.
– Know where to look next: The summary can guide you to important parts.
– Connect different subjects: See links between various topics.
– Introduce topics to students: Use parts of the summary to give an overview.

FAQ

You can generate a FAQ from the sources you upload. This could be used to support with planning lessons by identifying potential student questions, inform assessment design, identify knowledge gaps and the potential development of supplementary lesson materials.

Educators could use FAQ to:

– Guess student questions: See what students might ask about your documents.
– Spot tricky topics: Find areas where students might get confused.
– Make helpful study guides: Share the questions and answers with students.

– Change and improve questions: Edit the FAQ to make it better.

– Make visual aids for teaching: Use the timeline in presentations.

– See how ideas connect: Automatically create a visual showing relationships between concepts.
– Find main topics and sub-ideas: Easily see the central points and supporting details.
– Help brainstorm ideas: Use the visual to explore connections and create new thoughts.
– Organise learning: See the structure of information for better understanding.
– Summarise visually: Condense lots of text into an easy-to-see format.
– Support visual learners: Provide a picture of the information.
