Purpose and Audience #

The purpose of this page is to provide information around Generative AI (GenAI) and some key considerations when using such tools in an education context.

This page will explore the ways in which these tools can be used ethically, safely and securely.

This page is aimed at educators and those local authority colleagues who support learning, teaching and assessment.

About this Guidance #

This guidance has been co-designed with practitioners and local authority representatives to provide advice on the ways in which GenAI could be used appropriately to support learning, teaching and assessment. The guidance has been divided into key themes with guiding principles.

The Institute for Ethical AI in Education has proposed a framework to support educator understanding of these best use principles.

Themes

In line with what wider research and practice tells us about the use of AI in education (AIED), this guidance focuses on the following thematic approaches:

  • Learner assessment and feedback

  • Approaches to personalised learning

  • Reducing the administrative burden on educators

Best Use Principles

The guidance is underpinned by the following principles:

  • Safe, secure and ethical use

  • Alignment to the taught curriculum, supporting and not replacing educators

  • Transparency, equality of access and inclusivity in its use and outcomes

AI in Glow Position Statement #

The AI in Glow position statement outlines the work Education Scotland are taking forward to support the use of AI tools in learning and teaching and how it aligns with the Glow vision and goals. It summarises the investigative work being undertaken, guidance being developed and the current pilot underway with 2 LAs on the use of Google Gemini in Glow.  Also included are some examples of AI already in Glow and the statement also highlights some of the high level risk and mitigations that have been identified around using AI tools.
