Gemini Education Data Privacy

Estimated Reading Time: 9 mins

Overview #

Unlike the public version of Gemini, the education version is built to act like a secure “digital vault” for your school.

Think of it as the difference between a public park (the regular AI) and a locked classroom (Gemini Education).

Public Gemini Vs Gemini Education

The “Big Three” Privacy Promises #

For teachers, Google provides three non-negotiable protections that are active by default:

Your Data is Not for Sale

Google does not use any information from Gemini Education to build profiles for advertising. There are zero ads in the experience.

Not used for Training AI

In the public version of AI, the system “learns” from what people type. In Gemini Education, your prompts and the AI’s answers are never used to train Google’s AI models. Your ideas stay yours.

No Human Reviewers

No human reviewers at Google look at what you or your students type. Everything is processed by secure, automated systems.

Enterprise Grade Data Protection #

Unlike consumer versions of AI, Gemini Education is treated as a Core Service under the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. This means it inherits the same legal and security protections as Gmail, Docs, and Drive.

No Training on Your Data: Your prompts, responses, and uploaded files are not used to train Google’s underlying generative AI models.
No Human Review: Your interactions stay within your organisation and are not reviewed by human contractors.
Data Stays Local: Content generated or uploaded remains within your school’s domain and is not shared with other customers or institutions.

Robust Compliance and Certifications #

Google maintains high-level certifications to ensure these tools are safe for school environments, specifically targeting laws that protect user information:

GDPR: Gemini offers strong, GDPR-compliant data protections.
FERPA & COPPA: Supports compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
HIPAA: For higher education or research institutions, Gemini is capable of supporting HIPAA-regulated workloads.
Common Sense Privacy Seal: Gemini for Education has earned this third-party seal, which validates its commitment to student data protection.

Advanced Administrator Controls #

The Glow Team have granular control over how Gemini is deployed and used within Glow tenancies:

Access Management: Admins can enable or disable Gemini for specific organisational units (OUs) or groups (e.g., turning it on for educators but not for students under 18).
Data Retention: Admins can set auto-delete policies for chat history (72 weeks in Glow) or turn off history entirely to ensure data is not stored longer than necessary.
Data Loss Prevention (DLP): Schools can apply existing DLP rules to Gemini. For example, if a file is flagged as sensitive, Gemini can be restricted from accessing or summarising that content.

Safety for Younger Users (not currently available within Glow) #

For students who have access, Google enforces stricter content filters and default protections.

These safeguards are designed to block age-inappropriate content (such as age-gated substances) and promote responsible AI literacy through built-in educational resources.
