New Google Additional Service – Google Books

As you may know, Google Workspace is an opt in service so not all Glow users will have a Google account.

Once Local Authorities have opted into Google Workspace, they can also enable Google Additional Services. Google requires consent to be obtained and maintained for all users before they can use Additional Services. If a user is under 18 this has to be parental consent.

We are now delighted to share that the Glow Team has added Google Books to Google Additional Services users within Glow effective from 1 May 2024.

Free books in Google Books

Did you know that Google Books has more than 10 million free books available for users to read and download? And Google are adding more all of the time!

Google’s free books are made available to read through careful consideration of and respect for copyright law globally: they are public-domain works, made free on request of the copyright owner, or copyright-free.

Moreover, with Google Books you can create a ‘bookshelf’ that can be shared with other users, unlocking the ability to share reading materials digitally from within your Google tenancy. Whilst this is good at an individual user level, this may also be particularly useful for teachers who would like:

  • the ability to create different lists for students at different reading comprehension levels
  • to encourage students to create their own lists that can be shared with teachers to demonstrate their interests
  • to task their students with a reading list relevant to their subject area
  • to support extra curricular groups
