Creating effective and engaging Scots Language resources

Prompting Progress: How Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the classroom

This example is shared by a Primary 4 teacher from Glenlee Primary School, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire Council (SLC), who has been using Gemini and NotebookLM within Glow.

Use case: Creating effective and engaging Scots Language resources

Creating effective and engaging resources to assist pupils in Primary 4 in writing a poem in Scots Language to commemorate Robert Burns anniversary.

Prompt crafting

This was the prompt I used.

‘Can you create me a template for a poem to be written in Scots language, by Scottish primary 4 pupils that has Scottish images on it?’

Was it a ‘one-and-done’ success, or did you have to tweak your instructions to get what you needed?

Yes it was tweaked – I added a further prompt as it created resources for a Scots poem based on Scotland using the 5 senses, however, I felt a poem about a favourite animal might be easier for pupils to relate to, on reflection, as I had sourced a video that featured the names of animals in Scots:

‘Can you change the template to feature a poem written in Scots language about an animal, rather than Scotland, with a word bank for animals and adjectives in Scots at primary 4 level (poem should have 4 lines only)’

I also uploaded the video to Notebook LM to create a slideshow, which we reviewed as a class, noting the names of the animals – our favourite being the ‘bubblyjock ( a turkey!) This was also uploaded to Google Classroom for the pupils to access when writing their poem for support.

Success

I also uploaded the video to Notebook LM to create a slideshow, which we reviewed as a class, noting the names of the animals.

Man with a thumbs up for success

How the tools improved the task I was doing

Efficiency – my worksheet was created in a matter of seconds and also included a word bank and helpful tips to create each line of the poem including examples
Adaptability – was uploaded to Google Classroom for pupil use, which they could then tailor or add to and also a paper copy was printed, facilitating pupil choice.
Wow factor – the pupils loved seeing their creations ‘come to life’ using the Create Image tool and were all desperate to have their own creations come to life, therefore increasing pupil engagement. (Once the pupils had created their poems, I said I would select random pupils to read me their poems and I would input their descriptions as the prompt into the ‘Create Image’ tool in Gemini, to create an image of their Braw Beastie e.g. ‘can you create a cartoon image of a wee, tiny, dirty cow that is in a field’

My advice for others who haven’t used these tools before

Gemini is an absolutely fantastic resource that not only saves precious time, but enhances teaching and learning by providing ideas and suggestions that may not have been previously considered. It is also incredibly user friendly. I use it every week when carrying out my planning. Our Learning Community (Calderside) Moderation Group also used it to create a series of 6 lessons for our joint Equality and Diversity teaching, based on a book called ‘The Kindest Red’, including roleplays and empathy scenarios. These were all shared to our Moderation Google Class (see examples section)

Next steps

Improve practice and collaboration

I will continue to use tools such as Gemini and NotebookLM to create and enhance my learning and teaching resources to not only improve resources for my pupils, but to improve my own practice and collaboration with colleagues in my own school and across our learning community.
