To improve security and governance across Glow M365, we’re updating how external sharing works in SharePoint and OneDrive.
What’s changing?
Currently, when files, folders, or sites are shared with external users, their access does not automatically expire.
From the 7th October 2026, new external sharing links will now expire after 360 days.
- New external sharing links will automatically expire after 360 days.
- Content owners will receive reminder emails before access expires, allowing them to review and extend access if needed.
- Existing sharing links will not be affected by this change.
- Expired external sharing links can be renewed if required.
Default sharing permission will change to “View”
- New external shares will default to View-only access.
- If collaboration is needed, content owners can still grant Edit permissions when sharing.
Why are we making this change?
These updates help:
- Strengthen security for externally shared information.
- Ensure external access is reviewed regularly.
- Reduce unnecessary long-term external access.
- Apply the principle of least privilege by making view-only access the default.
What do I need to do?
No action is required for most users. If you regularly share content externally, please note:
- New external sharing links will automatically expire after 360 days
- Content owners will receive reminders when external sharing links are due to expire.
- External sharing will default to view-only permissions.
