Microsoft Teams: Turn notifications on or off for a post in a channel

What’s new?

Users on desktop and web can now manage notifications for individual posts within a team.

If you create a post, or reply to a post, notifications will be turned on by default for that post.  You may wish to disable them to reduce the number of notifications you receive when comments are made.

If you have not created the post, or commented on it, then notifications will be off by default for that post.  However you may wish to enable them to follow the conversation.

After you’ve changed the notification settings for a post, further participation in the comments will not change the setting i.e. if you comment on a post that you have manually disabled notifications on, notifications will remain disabled.

What are the benefits?

Users can now control when they are notified on comments for a post and benefit from,

  • Less distractions caused by busy posts that prompt lots of Teams notifications
  • Less email notifications if users have this enabled
  • Ability to follow posts that they’ve not participated in

How can I turn off post notifications?

Click on the 3 dots at the top right hand side of the post and click the Turn off notifications section from the menu options.

Please note

If you are a Team Owner of a team that includes learners, you should continue to monitor activity, even if you disable notifications for individual posts.
